Well today I'm reviewing Michelle Lauren's debut novel, Starstruck: Hunter. She contacted me to schedule a book review, author interview and author guest blog which we worked out for today and this coming Thursday. I have also interviewed Michelle yesterday if you want to check it out. I definitely think so because even though Noah has only just met Miranda she has really become really important to him and would do anything to keep her safe. That goes double because of his past as a star hunter and being unable to safe the star that he founds was just a woman who was being painfully murdered for her life-prolonging energy. This is a short story and there were a couple of twists that had me very intrigued in finding out how things would end for both Miranda and Noah who were only just starting their hasty marriage. I think Michelle has created a paranormal world where stars are people that will keep you on the edge of your seat to find out more about this fascinating world. Michelle Lauren delivers the start to a series filled with intrigue and mystery that will have you wanting more even though you have finished reading the novel. I very much look forward to the next book in the Celestial Lovers series. I give this book 3.5 Open Books:

So I decided that after reviewing Julie James novel, Practice Makes Perfect, I would give her debut novel a read. I really enjoyed reading this novel since it's about a lawyer and a movie start getting together, which I knew had to be a fun read. Taylor Donovan is a lawyer who is assigned to coach People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” movie star Jason Andrews with his role in his next big legal thriller. I laughed so much while reading this novel since I think Taylor and Jason clashed with one another many times because there was so much sexual tension going on between them. I liked that I laughed about the antics that these two characters would get into since it makes reading the novel so much more enjoyable. You can tell that Taylor and Jason can't believe that they are attracted to one another so intensely and they are trying to work through them working with each other while making their budding relationshiop work. One of the draw backs with this novel which I find is one of the things that I don't much care for in Julie's books is that it's a sweet romance with no actual love scenes just a prelude to a love scene. So I guess in the end I give this book 3.5 Open Books:

I found Kathryn Caskie through the Romance Novel TV forum and when I went to her website I read about her Royle Sisters Trilogy. I instantly knew that I had to find those books and read them. Well I went to the Barnes & Noble website and found that the first book in the series was not in the bookstore close to me but the second and third were. So I decided to buy them online instead so I would get them all together. I'm glad that I bought them because they are great books that I enjoyed reading. I like reading historical romances especially when they involve a big mystery having to do with historical figures but twisted around to make it believable even though its not. This series is about triplet sisters who maybe the actual "secret" daughters of the prince regent of England and there is also so much scandal and mystery intangled with this story that the sisters feel that they have to find out. Mary Royle is the oldest of the triplets and fell in love and in the end married the Rogan the Duke of Blackthrone in the first book of the series, How to Seduce a Duke. Then Anne Royle who is the middle triplet sister and the most shy of them to got her love story told in the second book of the series, How to Engage an Earl. Now it's the youngest of the triplet sisters to get her love story told in Kathryn Caskie's Royle Sisters Trilogy.
When Elizabeth, youngest of the notorious Royle sisters, comes face-to-face with her future husband, a man she’s seen only in her dreams, she nearly swoons—especially when she discovers he is a prince. We have only read about Elizabeth in the previous novels as the youngest and the one with the dreams of what the future may hold but now she's dreaming about her future since her two other sisters already found their true loves. But her ecstasy of finding her prince charming is short-lived as she quickly learns that the man she longs for is betrothed to someone—a princess no less. Not everything is as it seems though most women would give up, but Elizabeth is a Royle, after all. Refusing to surrender her dreams of a royal wedding, Elizabeth takes the position of lady-in-waiting to the fiancée, determined to get close to her perfect match. But the lover she desires is not who he seems…and only once she discovers the true man behind the crown will she find the perfect love she’s been longing for all her life.
After enjoying the first two books in this series I was so excited to finally get to find out if the Royle sisters are really the royal daughters of the Prince Regent. I also wanted to find out who Elizabeth would end up falling in love with and marrying because her sisters both found love in such wonderful men who gave them a higher station in life then what they expected. It was such fun reading about how Elizabeth tries to land her dream prince charming even though there are issues that may very well keep them apart if they don't figure out a way to be together. Now the supposed prince that Elizabeth falls for is Prince Leopold of Sax-Coburg-Saalfield but when she first meets him at a jewlery shop he introduces himself as Sumner Lansdowne, Marquess of Whitevale. There is a lot of intrigue and mayham going on in this novel that I was flipping the pages so fast I almost got a paper-cut. It was such a relief to finally get to find out the secret to the entire series because it really had me anxious to finally get the answer. I also liked the ending because it really left me feeling that if Kathye Caskie really wanted to she could really pick up from there and write more books into this series. Well I went to the Barnes & Noble website and found that the first book in the series was not in the bookstore close to me but the second and third were. So I decided to buy them online instead so I would get them all together. I'm glad that I bought them because they are great books that I enjoyed reading. I like reading historical romances especially when they involve a big mystery having to do with historical figures but twisted around to make it believable even though its not. This series is about triplet sisters who maybe the actual "secret" daughters of the prince regent of England and there is also so much scandal and mystery intangled with this story that the sisters feel that they have to find out. Mary Royle is the oldest of the triplets and fell in love and in the end married the Rogan the Duke of Blackthrone in the first book of the series, How to Seduce a Duke. Now it is the middle triplet sister and they most shy of them to get her love story told in this series.
Anne Royle is the middle sister of the triplets and the one that seems to be invisible of the three when they are with company in balls or parties. Anne liked to show her sister, Elizabeth, that she is practically invisible to all the other guests at the party so she plays a game of stealing certain guests glasses of wine to prove that they don't even notice that she took them. But that didn't work with Laird who noticed Anne playing her game and decided to catch her in the act to get to her close to him. Now the last thing Laird the Earl of MacLaren wants is a wife, so when he awakens to discover the fair-haired enchantress from the party at the foot of his bed, he behaves as any man might, by taking full advantage of the delicious situation. Then his family bursts in, and the chit brazenly announces that she is his betrothed, so he finds himself well on his way to being leg-shackled for life. Beautiful, reserved Anne Royle had never done anything so mad in her life because she entered the earl’s bedchamber with no intention of seduction at all. Rather, she hoped to discover a document that could contain the truth about her heritage. But now her world is turned upside down, and while she trembles at the thought of her wedding night, she finds she longs for it in ways she never thought possible.
Anne is the more reserved and quite of the triplet sisters though that doesn't mean that she isn't as special as her other sisters. I really like her because she uses her talent of being invisible to the ton to her advantage without taking it too personal like other women of the ton would have. After having read just a bit about Anne from the first book I was very intrigued to find out more about her as well as read how she would end up with her true love. In comes Laird the Earl of MacLaren who is a very infamous rogue who is trying to change his way in order to make his mother and his family name. I also like him because he maybe a rogue but he is trying to change his ways because he wants his family to be proud and needs a change in his life. I think they are a pretty good match for one another because though they have their differences they have some common qualities that bring them together. It was great to read more about the mystery of the Royle Triplet sisters because it's a wonder if they are really princesses who were supposed to have been born still without the Prince Regent knowing about them. I'm looking forward to reading the last book in this series so I can finally find out how everything ends for them. I give this book 3.5 Open Books:

I do love paranormal romances very much because the authors create this totally different world that is similar to our own world. But these worlds these authors create are filled with all these paranormal creatures that we only think is myth but are totally real in paranormal romances. I know that author Jessica Coulter Smith loves to read paranormal romances so when she writes paranormal romances are what she ends up creating. I had her guest blog here about her novel, Moonlight Protector, which is the first book of her Ashton Grove Werewolves series. I also posting my interview with her here so you can read it to find out more about Jessica's writing and about some of her hobbies and favorite authors. I had the pleasure of reviewing her first book in her new series called Moonlight Protector and what a nice read that was for me. Well I have been reading a lot of books since I joined up to be a reviewer for the website Manic Readers and this is one of my many reviews for them. Today I'm going to be posting my review of Magnolia Magick by Jessica Coulter Smith.

Lissa, who is a famous romance author, has travelled to a small town in southern Georgia because she needs to complete her latest novel for her agent or else. So she decides to rent an antebellum plantation for the next six months that she forgot to check out before deciding to rent the place. However, she didn’t count on sharing her temporary home with the resident ghost who is named Jesse and he has been dead for almost one hundred years. In all of his time on earth, both as a living person and spectral ghost haunting his home, he has never met anyone as special to him as Lissa. If Jesse had a beating heart, it would have stopped beating the moment he saw her because why couldn’t Lissa, who is passionate, beautiful, talented woman, have come along while he was still alive. During a trip to town, Lissa meets the local bank owner named Jared and he is one sinfully handsome banker who sweeps Lissa off her feet after five minutes. He claims to be in love with her and wants her to move permanently to the small town of Maple Falls so that they can continue their very fast paced relationship. Things are heating up very quickly between the two of them which leaves Lissa totally confused over whether it’s really love or uncontrollable lust that is drawing them together after such a short time. When Jared finds out that Lissa likes to casts spells and visits a magick shop things take a turn for the worse for their relationship. Jared can’t afford the hint of scandal which will send him running the other way instead of standing by Lissa in her time of need.
I’ve read the first book of Jessica Coulter Smith’s Ashton Grove Werewolves series and really loved it so I was very much looking forward to reading one of her stand alone novels. The cover of Magnolia Magick really grabbed me when I first saw it, so I went to read the blurb next to see what the book would be about. I love to read paranormal romances because they take what we think of as normal and turn it into a totally different world filled with their own imagined beliefs of paranormal. I don’t read much paranormal romances about ghosts so it was a nice change of pace to read this novel by an author I liked reading. I thought it was so interesting that the heroine Lissa is a famous romance author in need of some alone time to get her next novel in her best selling series finished. It added a wonderful twist when she gets to the house she’s renting and finds the ghost of a very hot man living there already. I really thought that Lissa and Jesse were the intended couple in the beginning but then she meets Jared who really sweeps her off her feet. I was not that happy with that twist to the story because I thought Lissa and Jesse were the perfect couple. That didn’t put me off to the novel though because as I kept reading I could see that there was something bigger for Lissa and Jesse. There was something about Jared that I thought was too smooth and charming that I didn’t like and could see that it will be a good to be true relationship for Lissa. I was both sad and happy when things took a turn for the worse but I was so happy for the wonderful ending. Jessica Coulter Smith delivers an intriguing paranormal novel with twists and turns that will keep you guessing and with the thought of getting a wonderful happily ever after.

Well I have been reading a lot of books since I joined up to be a reviewer for the website Manic Readers and this is one of my many reviews for them. Today I'm going to be posting my review of Practice Makes Perfect by Julie James.

Payton Kendall, a feminist to the bone, has struggled very hard to make it in a profession that has been dominated by men for years. J.D. Jameson, born wealthy, privileged, and cocky has struggled hard to ignore her while trying to become a successful lawyer independent from his family. Payton and J.D. are lawyers who have made it their mission to make a success of their careers and when they are face to face, they’re perfectly civil to one another because they have to be. For the past eight years they’ve kept a very safe reserve and tolerated each other as co-workers for one reason only and that is to finally make partner at the firm. But all bets are off when they’re asked to join forces on a major case that could be the best opportunity to show the firm that they are perfect candidates for partners. At first Payton and J.D. are anxious but they soon begin to appreciate each other’s dedication and passion to the law they chose to practice and that is when the sparks between them quickly turn into a passionate attraction. But the increasingly steamy hot connection they feel toward each other doesn’t last long when they discover that only one of them will be named partner in a couple of weeks. Now it’s going to be an all out war and it becomes a big battle between the sexes, which is bound to make these lawyers very hot under the collar.
Before I read this book I read Julie James debut novel Just the Sexiest Man Alive, which I really had fun reading. So I was very much looking forward to reading Practice Makes Perfect since I heard it was a great read with high ratings. I haven’t read many romance novels with lawyers as the heroine or hero so this novel was a really change of pace for me. I have been told that I could be a lawyer since I love to make a case of almost every argument I have ever had. But once I found out everything you need to know to be a lawyer and all the hours on average a lawyer works a week I knew that was not a career for me. I really enjoyed the relationship between Payton and J.D. because they are such dedicated lawyers who have several characteristics in common with each other. I really got to know each character as I read this novel which is really great and I also thought that some of the scenes between Payton and J.D. were pretty hilarious that I found myself laughing out loud most of the time.Payton is a very strong and independent woman and I had a great time getting to know her as well as see her develop as the novel progressed. J.D. is also a strong and independent man who was born wealthy but is really too cocky at times that I really just wanted to smack him at times but that didn’t turn me away from liking him as much as I do Payton. There was one thing that I really would have liked as I read this novel and that was a bit more steamy scenes between Payton and J.D. because I could tell that they have that hot and heavy attraction to each other. In the end, reading this novel was such a joy that I really do look forward to reading more books by Julie James in the future. Julie James delivers a hilariously funny novel with wonderfully intriguing characters that had me laughing and smiling.

I instantly knew that I had to find those books and read them. Well I went to the Barnes & Noble website and found that the first book in the series was not in the bookstore close to me but the second and third were. So I decided to buy them online instead so I would get them all together. I'm glad that I bought them because they are great books that I enjoyed reading. I like reading historical romances especially when they involve a big mystery having to do with historical figures but twisted around to make it believable even though its not. This series is about triplet sisters who maybe the actual "secret" daughters of the prince regent of England and there is also so much scandal and mystery intangled with this story that the sisters feel that they have to find out. Mary Royle is the oldest of the triplets and the one that has chosen the man she is going to marry now that they are in England searching for titled gentlemen to marry.
Why is the notorious Duke of Blackstone ruining Mary’s well-laid plans to marry his brother, the handsome Viscount Wetherly? Well that is a understandable question because Mary has really set her mind to marry Rogan's, Duke of Blackstone, brother after seeing him at the park various times. Every time she turns a corner, he is there—tantalizing her, teasing her…and the more she tries to ignore him, the more insistent he becomes. Rogan has a plan that he has set in motion to save his brother from marrying a title hungry Mary even though he hasn't gotten to know her well enough to pass any judgments. Mary knows she must make an advantageous marriage, but survey Blackstone is the wrong man for her...isn’t he? Well while Mary is wondering why Rogan doesn't want her marrying his brother Rogan is puttin his plan to work because he is not about to let his brother become bewitched by some wily blueblood pretender…even one as deliciously tempting as Mary. But until she came along, no woman has ever resisted his smooth well-practiced seductions so could it be that he’s actually fallen in love with this infuriating chit.
Well Mary and Rogan's journey to falling in love is a very entertaining story because they are such strong, independent and stubborn people who want something and will do what they must to achieve it. The Royle secret about the triplets possibly being princesses and the supposed daughters of the Prince Regent gives this series a very exciting twist that I really enjoyed find more about. I really enjoyed getting to know Mary Royle because as the oldest triplet she feels responsible for her younger sisters and wants to make a titled marriage so they could have doors to the ton opened to them. I think Rogan is just the man for Mary because even though he is thought of as a blackhearted rogue deep down he is a decent gentleman in search of the woman who is out there waiting for him. I really got into this novel and I had fun getting to know Mary's younger sisters Anne and Elizabeth that when I finished reading this novel I was looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I loved reading Lisa Lane's erotic romance Lust in Space so I when Lisa contacted me so that I could review her The Darkness & the Night series, which is dark horror erotic romance. I read the blurbs she has on her website and really thought I should give these novels a try because they sounded very intriguing. The protaganist of the series, Karen, is a young woman fresh out of grad school, with just one stop left to make before beginning of the rest of her life. Agreeing to meet her family at the old summer home one last time in the hopes of finding some sort of closure to the estrangement between her and her paranoid and delusional father. Karen then suddenly finds herself alone in the large house, in the middle of nowhere, after her family calls to report a travel delay. Now Karen begins to question her own sanity when she falls victim to a vampire attack that night, which reminds her the similar circumstances behind her father’s psychotic break in which his delusions, however, he was the vampire hunter.

I had a good time reading this novel because it was different from many of the novels that I usually read. I both liked and disliked Karen because even though she is a strong female character there are times that I really thought she could have done things differently if she wanted to. This also goes the same for Billy the vampire who turns Karen because seems like a nice loving guy but then he shows his true colors as a psyhco. There were some very steamy sex scenes between Karen and Billy that I really enjoyed because they have this attraction to one another even though at first Karen hates Billy for turning her. I also felt kind of creeped out when I read some the scary suspense scenes throughout the novel and I should expect that since it is a dark horror erotic novel with vampires. I enjoyed reading the novel though sometimes I wondered who was good and who was evil throughout the novel because sometimes Karen seemed like she was headed towards being evil while somtimes Billy was headed towards actually being good. Towards the end of the novel I was really looking forward to reading the next The Darkness & the Night series to find out what else is in store for Karen and Billy after the way this novel ended. I have found another amazing new teens series about vampires by Rachel Caine which I have found is a genre that a lot of young adult authors have really taken control over. I went to Rachel Caine's website to find out more about the Morganville Vampires series and found out that there are 5 books in the series with the 6th book coming out in June of this year. I read the sample chapter of the first book in the series, Glass House, since there weren't any blurbs and it seemed it would be a good idea to get a feel for what I was going to read before I buy the series. I was instantly hooked after reading the first chapter of the book even though there were a few grammar errors in the chapter posted on the website. I found out that I can reserve a copy of the books through Barnes and Nobles website at my local BN and I was lucky enough when they e-mailed me that they had all 5 books there and I could pick it up the next day. I was reading Veronica Wolff's Sword of the Highlands at the time but as soon as I finished that novel I immediately snapped up my copy of Glass House and instantly devoured it in less than a day.
The novel is set in a small college town with some quirky characters during the day but when the sun goes down, the bad comes out and you better watch your neck because you might find a vampire bitting it if you're not careful. Claire Danvers has had enough of her nightmarish dorm situation after having been thrown down a flight of stairs and be threaten with death by the evil popular girls living at her dorm. The popular girls, with Monica Morrell as the leader, never let her forget just where she ranks on the school’s social scene: somewhere 100 times below zero. And Claire really doesn’t have the right connections—to the undead who run the town so she has to find a way to deal with her situation or end up just one of the many college students who suddenly disappear. When Claire heads off campus in search of find a room anywhere outside the dorms, the imposing old house where she finds a room may not be much better. Her new roommates don’t show many signs of life but that all changes because they’ll have Claire’s back when the town’s deepest secrets come crawling out, hungry for fresh blood.
I found this novel very interesting and I had a fun time reading it because it is such a difference from all the other teen vampire series out their nowadays. I really fell in love with Claire because even though I have nothing in common with her I think she is such a real and complex character that has some very appealing qualities for a protaganist of a series. It was so horrible all the things that Claire went through in this novel but it just made the start of this series so much better at keeping me interested enough to want to continue reading more. I thought the characters Shane, Eve and Michael who give Claire a room in their place were intriguing characters that I can see are going to be loyal and true friends even in the most tough and dangerous situations. Rachel Caine delivers a refreshingly exciting vampire series that will hook you from start to finish and will keep you wanting more and more. After devouring this novel I immediately grabbed the second book in the series because like I said I wanted to read more about Claire and her new friends. I give the book 3.5 Open Books:

I found out about Linda Gerber through Amanda Ashyby's blog diary and I went to find out more about Linda Gerber and her young adult novels. She writes young adult mystery novels and I've dubbed her recent series the Aphra Connolly Death Mystery Series because she doesn't name it. I bought the first two in the series called Death by Bikini and Death by Latte because they really caught my attention when I read the blurbs. Aphra Connolly had a very dangerous but enlightening mystery adventure in teh first book. She met Seth Mulo and can't get over him even though his parents and him are on the run from the CIA agency who want to use them at all costs. At the end of the first book Aphra finds out that her mother had been in touch with her over the 6 years since her dad moved them to the island. She had also found out where she lives right now in Seattle and has decided tha she was going to visit her without her father knowing about it. I really like Aphra because she is a strong, intelligent and independent young woman who somehow finds a murder mystery that puts her life on the line almost every time.
She finally gets to be with her mother after years of thinking she didn't want her anymore, though Aphra is starting to see that her mother might have had a very good reason for leaving her and her dad. It was great to read about Seth and Aphra after their goodby on the island in the first book. I really like Aphra and Seth as a couple but I don't see how their relationship is going to work because Seth and his parents are still on the run. There were so much going on in this novel that had me flipping the pages to find out how Aphra would get out of this dangerous mess or solve this murder. Finally getting to know about Aphra's former CIA agent mother because in the first book she was mentioned and it made me very curious about her and why she left Aphra and her father. Linda Gerber delivers a suspenseful mystery that kept me on my toes and flipping the pages to find out how things ends for Aphra. I can't wait to get my hands on the third book in the series called Death by Denim coming out in April 2009 because the last book left me wanting more! I give this book 3.5 Open Books:

Mitch Carter and Belle Forsham have a past together that they have left to fester for years after Belle jilted Mitch at the altar. But after years past Mitch is a very sucessful businessman who is in need of an event planner for his new resort. Belle has also really made a success of her life in her partnership with her best friend in their event planning business. The instant Mitch and Belle came face to face with each other again after what happened the last time they were together I knew they still had something between them. I could practically feel the blazing heat and attraction between them though Mitch hid it very well from Belle at the beginning but soon enough they just couldn't resist one another. It was really a pleasure reading about Mitch and Belle's renewed relationship with one another because from the beginning I knew that they would be good together as long as they find a way to resolve their past misfortune. Tawny Weber delivers a blazingly intense love story about two loves who were broken apart by a missunderstanding and a trecherous enemy who hid in the shadows. I look forward to reading Going Down Hard because it will be about Belle's BFF and Mitch's cousin who we meet for the first time in Coming on Strong. I give this book 3.5 Open Books:

Aphra Behn Connolly has the type of life most teenage girls envy because she lives on a tropical island and spends most of her time eavesdropping on the rich and famous. That can both be amazing but lonely at times when you really would like to be like everyone else and the problem is that her family’s secluded luxury resort allows few opportunities for her to make friends—much less to meet cute boys.
So when a smoldering Seth Mulo unexpectedly arrives with his parents, she’s immediately drawn to him and who wouldn't because he is the first hot boy her age she has seen in a long time. Then a girl turns up dead on the beach—the strings of her bikini top tight around her neck—and alarm bells sound. What exactly are Seth and his family hiding? And is it too great a coincidence that they turned up just one day before a murder? As the plot thickens, Aphra finds that danger lurks behind even the most unexpected of faces. There was so much suspense in this novel I just couldn't but it down unless absolutely nessecary because I wanted to know everything that would happen with Aphra and Seth. I thought that Aphra is such a wonderful character that I could at times relate to because it was so long ago I was her age. I also thought that Seth is such cute guy but with a lot of issues that can make a relationship between Aphra and him a bit complicated.
I've read a couple of young adults books before and loved them very much so I was so happy that Death by Bikini didn't disappoint me it was so good. I also loved the book cover because it is so different to all the other book covers I've seen with the other young adult novels. Linda Gerber delievers an exciting, suspenseful mystery with many twists and turns that I couldn't put the book down until I finally knew how things would end with Aphra. This is the beginning of an amazing series that I will definitely be putting on my keeper shelf as well as looking forward to reading any of the future books in this series. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Death by Latte, as well as the upcoming release, Death by Denim, which comes out in May 2009. I give this book 3.5 Open Books:

Jessica Andersen is not one of those authors that I have stumbled upon in one of my many trips to Barnes and Noble. I was brought to the attention of author Jessica Anderson aka Doc Jess through JR Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood forum. I went to her website to find out more about her and about her books. I found out that she has been writing Harlequin Intrigue for a couple of years before she came out with her new series called The Final Prophecy. Her first novel in the series called Nightkeepers came out on the same day as Ward's 6th novel of her BDB series Lover Enshrined. It was only recently that I was able to finally get to reading Andersen's book but I finally gotten to it and was lucky enough to win a signed copy of her second novel in the series Dawnkeepers. I've interviewed Jessica Andersen here on the blog last year if you want to check out what went down in that interview that she mentioned many interesting things.
After reading Nightkeepers I was really looking forward to find out more about all the characters that I came to know and love from the first book come back in the second novel. The countdown to the end of days has begun and according to ancient prophecy, on December 21, 2012, Mayan demons from the underworld will trigger an apocalypse. That is not something you want happening if you want to continue living the lives you have or making a better life than you already have. Now only the Nightkeepers, mortal descendants of a race of magic-wielding warrior-priests, can prevent the annihilation of all mankind and it's going to be a very rocky road that they will be travelling. In the first book we learned about the Nightkeepers as well as the king named Strike and his mate Leah, who use to be a mortal police officer. We met the other surviving Nightkeepers that are going to help the Strike save the world from the Mayan demon destruction that was awaiting them at the end time on December 21, 2012. They are all in the twenties and so not ready to become the Nightkeepers that they were meant to be in order to save the world from the dangerously evil Mayan demons who want to come to the mortal world.
Nate Blackhawk, who we met in the first book Nightkeepers, can’t help but resent the demands of his bloodline and unlike his fellow Nightkeepers, he isn’t about to let the gods determine his destiny—especially when it comes to love. Which means he refuses to submit to the unquenchable desire he feels for Alexis Gray, the shockingly beautiful trainee who first appeared in his visions. But that’s easier said than done, considering that Nate needs Alexis’s help to uncovering the seven Mayan artifacts inscribed with clues on how to defeat the demons. Alexis is willing to do whatever is necessary to prove herself as a Nightkeeper and she believes in the life she was born into and the future the gods have written for her—even when it comes to Nate, who seems intent on ignoring the intense passion between them. But as she and Nate test their powers in a race to recover the seven statuettes before the demons do and Alexis finds it impossible to deny her feelings for the one man who’s destined to be hers.
The Nightkeepers world just keeps getting more intense with each book and that's a good thing because it makes reading them so much fun. There were some scenes in the first book about Nate and Alexis that leads us to believe that there will be a future for them in the Nightkeeper world. It was so amazing to finally get their love story read because they are complete opposites who I had a bit of trouble trying to get why they would be so attracted to each other besides knowing that they were meant to be mated Nightkeepers. There are a lot of new things going on this book that really hit me because I didn't expect it but it was very enlightening to this new Nightkeepers world that I've only just begun understanding. Nate and Alexis are not always on the same page with one another but they have this attraction to one another that pulls them closer and closer to each other that they can't stop it. Even though at first I didn't think they were right for each other as I got further into the novel I saw that they are just right for a couple who will live an interesting and full life together. I was very sad that the novel ended but I consoled myself with the knowledge that soon the third book Skykeepers would be be coming out for me to know what's going to happen next. I met Lisa Marie Wilkinson through one of the various online romance communities that I am a member of. I was also very lucky to have one an Advanced Readers Copy of the novel to read and review before the release date in March 2009. I love historical romances because history is such a fascinating subject for me since all these horrifying yet amazing things happen in the past all over the world. Fire at Midnight is Lisa Marie Wilkinison's debut novel into the romance world and she delivers one suspense filled historical romance with such compelling characters that had me hooked from the first page. Lisa and I are working out a schedule for me to interview her here on the blog sometime in March as well as have her author guest blog about her novel Fire at Midnight so keep a look out for those two posts. Well now lets get down to the actual review of the novel.
It is 1703 in England, and Rachael Penrose is confined to Bedlam Insane Asylum in London after discovering her uncle Victor plans to kill her baby brother, James, in order to inherit the family fortune. Rachael and her brother James are the only family besides Victor who can claim the Penrose inheritance and that is something Victor wants. So Victor leads a gang of criminals and uses French privateer/smuggler Sebastién Falconer as the scapegoat for his crimes and he spreads the lie that Rachael informed the authorities of Falconer’s smuggling activities and so Sebastién now vows revenge on Rachael. Then a dangerously ill Rachael finally escapes from Bedlam, only to find shelter in Sebastién’s carriage and ends up in his care for the time being. It is a twist of fate that will alter both their lives forever because when she finds out who Sebastién really is and then believing she is in danger from Sebastién, Rachael meets up with his estranged twin brother. Jacques, Sebastién's Englishman twin brother, a customs officer intent on bringing him, Sebastién, the famous privateer to justice. But the real criminal is still at large, and Rachael and her baby brother are still in danger. Will she discover the truth and save both their lives…and her heart?
Well that is the question that had me flipping the pages to find the answer to as I was devouring this novel as fast as I could. The heroine Rachael Penrose seems like a nice and honest young woman who loves her baby brother and would do anything to keep him safe from harm. I thought she was a very strong young woman because she handled the responsibility of taking care of James seriously and she could have dropped everything to live her own life but she didn't. Even though her evil uncle was trying to kill both her and her brother she stayed in the country and tried to find a way to finally live in peace with James. The hero Sebastién Falconer is a privateer/smuggler from France who has a twin brother who he hates because he was raised by his mother in England and abandoned him in france with his paternal grandfather. Sebastién is a very complex Frenchman who has family issues that really affects his future relationship especially with Rachael who is one of those dreaded Englishwomen he doesn't like. Lisa Marie Wilkinson delievers an exciting, suspenseful and steamy novel full of intriguing lovers spats between Rachael and Sebastién. It was a book that I could hardly put down until I found out what was going to be happen between Sebastién and Rachael as well as the other secondary characters who made this novel so great to read. I'm so looking forward to any of Lisa Marie's future novels now that I've read her debut novel and loved it. I give this book 3.5 Open Books:

After reading Emily Bryan's Pleasuring the Pirate I become a fan of her work and was very looking forward to her next release. I was especially excited because this book though a stand alone is contected to her book Pleasuring the Pirate because Daisy Drake the second oldest of Gabriel Drake's nieces is the heroine of this novel. I thought Daisy was such a fun and awfully cute little girl with a sharp wit in the first book and I was so glad to get the chance to read about her love story. I was one of the lucky people to get this advanced readers copy of the novel Vexing the Viscount for my enjoyment as well as for me to review and spread the word to everyone I could. As children they’d sparred with play swords, which lead to her scarring his chin, and to him bracking her heart. Now, more than a decade later, the true battle was only beginning because Daisy Drake needed Lucian Beaumont, Viscount Rutland, the boy and now man who has always been in her thoughts since the day they met. It was definitely Lucians dark, tall and handsome looks that had her searching him out the clues he held to a long-buried Roman treasure was just an incentive to get close to him after so long.
Too bad Lucian wanted no help from her—until she donned the disguise of an infamous French courtesan and promised to teach him all she knew about the pleasures of the bedchamber. Now that was the a twist that I had fun reading play out in this novel especially since I knew that sooner or later it was going to come out that Daisy and the French courtesan were one and the same. Of course, she only knew what had been written in naughty books but Daisy had always been a quick learner and though she was a bit hesitant at playing this part she couldn't resist getting intimate with Lucian. And night by naked night, they’d discover a treasure neither expected to find with one another especially since Lucian's father hated all the Drakes. Just like when I was reading Pleasuring the Pirate I could not but this book down for long because Daisy and Lucian kept me turning the pages trying to find out what crazy thing would happen next. After finishing up this book it really got me to thinking that Emily should really write up another book but this time she should write about the Darke twins who I thought were so cute in Pleasuring the Pirate. Also to have the youngest Drake niece Lily have her own love story as well because she was just adorable and I would love to see how she turned out as a young lady. Well I can only hope that Emily reads this and gets struck with inspiration on writing it out and getting them published soon. I give this book 3.5 Open Books:

Emily Bryan is a new historical romance author for me who I found through one of my many online romance communities and after reading her novel Pleasuring the Pirate I've become a fan of her work so I will be looking forward to reading more of her future novels. I was fortunate enough to get an autographed copy of this book from Emily Bryan herself with some other goodies as well. I read about the book on her website before I actually got the book and I was really excited when I finally got started reading the novel. All it took was a flick of the wrist and a deft touch of his sword point and Drake the Dragon bared her bound breasts. That is one of the scenes that starts this excitingly passionate novel and had me flipping the pages with excitement trying to find out more. Then with the heat of his hands along her skin, he bared her soul and all the wantonness Jacquelyn Wrenn had denied herself as a famous courtesan’s daughter. She has never felt this before but now all the desire she’d held in her heart while running Lord Gabriel Drake’s estate flooded through her at his touch and that begins our story of Jacquelyn and Gabriel's love story.
Not that she could let a bloody pirate know it that she was very attracted to him because he is a man she can never let herself fall in love with. Gabriel may have left his seafaring days behind, but his urge to plunder was stronger than ever and especially if it involved full, ripe lips and a warm, soft body that Jacquelyn certainly possed. Unfortunately, he needed Jacquelyn’s help, not her maidenhead, to learn how to behave properly toward a lady so he could marry and produce an heir. Their estate needs the money because they are very close to losing their home and the homes of the people who live and work for them as well. Yet Mistress Jack was the only woman Gabriel wanted, no matter what her heritage is and everyone knows that what a pirate wants a pirate takes. I really could not put this book down for long because the sexual tension between Jacquelyn and Gabriel had me flipping the pages so fast I almost got a paper cut trying to find out what would happen next for them.
Also the intrigue and a bit of suspense had me captivated throughout this novel especially since all the characters no matter if they be the hero and heroine or the secondary characters were fun to get to know. After finishing up this novel I got to wondering what would happen to Gabriel's four young nieces who are such darlings in this book that I thought they would need a story of their own. Well fortunately Emily's next release called Vexing the Viscount is technically a stand alone just like this novel but they are contected to one another and can you guess what that connections is? Well Vexing the Viscount is about Daisy Drake the second oldest of Gabriel's nieces and she is all grown up and falling in love with an Italian. I was lucky enough to get an advanced readers copy of it and will be getting to it right now so I can post my review of it next. I give this book 3.5 Open Books:
