I loved reading Lisa Lane's erotic romance Lust in Space so I when Lisa contacted me so that I could review her The Darkness & the Night series, which is dark horror erotic romance. I read the blurbs she has on her website and really thought I should give these novels a try because they sounded very intriguing. Karen's odyssey continues as she escapes from the mental hospital, after having accidentally turned another patient into a vampire. She has had it really tough because her supposed love Billy has been killed in the first book in the astral plane and now she is all alone with twins on the way. She immediately finds herself running from a bounty hunter and his donor, sent by the insane commune leader, John-Michael, who has convinced himself that Karen is carrying his heir. That John-Michael is one insane vamp who really needs to get his ass kicked by reality because he knew that Karen was pregnant with Billy's babies before they came to the commune. Karen's life right now is not going as she had planned because now she is alone in a mental institution that knows she's a vampire and want to exploit her.
In the meanwhile, Karen finds herself haunted by Billy's restless spirit, his fluke death on the Astral having trapped him between planes. He visits her in her dreams, unable to accept his death...and slowly, the dreams become nightmares as he decides he doesn't want to let her go. In a strange turn of events, lover becomes captor, foe becomes ally, love begins anew, and Karen survives her biggest challenge yet...childbirth. This book is much more exciting and scarier than the first book because now I have a sense of who is evil and who isn't unlike the first book. I like Karen more in this novel because she has come to accept that she is a vampire and doesn't have to kill a human in order to survive. There were some pretty scary and heartbreaking scenes in this book that I enjoyed reading about because it really helped me understand Karen and even Billy more than I did before. I finished the book much quicker than the first and by the time I read the last sentence in the last chapter I really wanted Lisa Lane's next and conclusion to her The Darkness & the Night series to be published already so I could read it. I give this book 4 Open Books:

Hi. *waves* I’m Angela Cameron, your lead blogger for the day on the Ravenous Romance Blog Tour. Our question for the day is this: “What do you feel is the most important thing that you can bring to your readers?” Angela Cameron: For me, other than a well-written story, I think that the most important thing that I can bring my readers is fun. Stories are daydreams that we share with our readers, escapes. Personally, I want to escape to a place where there’s action, suspense, romance, and so many other things that are not in the humdrum life of laundry and work. I want to visit another world, be seduced by a hottie, and still have time to catch a bad guy. My readers aren’t much different. So, if they’re spending their hard-earned money on one of my books, I think that they should get their money’s worth. Let’s hear what the other my friends from Ravenous have to say about this, and then I want to know what you think is the most important. Isabel Roman: Solid plot with believable characters and a steamy romantic story. Also, emotional involvement with the characters. I love to make someone feel something—whether it’s hatred toward a villain, sadness for the black moments, or infatuation with the hero, it’s about eliciting a reaction. Neve Black: I want the reader to identify with the character or the situation. Lisa Lane: It is my hope that my readers experience the same magic I feel when writing a passage that has taken on a depth and life of its own. My muses have a fascination with profundity, which can make for some disturbing plot twists, but also some interesting insights. EM Lynley: My main goal is to entertain readers. I want to give people a little something outside of their everyday life to come to that's just pure enjoyment. I like introducing them to a set of characters that they can love and think about, maybe even after they're done reading the book. Jamaica Layne: I want them to be entertained and to have a good time while reading. If I haven't done that, then I haven't done my job. Inara LaVey: Entertainment! And hopefully what good books give me—a pocket of time transported away from reality into another world. C. Margery Kempe: I have a lot of esoteric knowledge that I like to make accessible to a wide audience. I guess it's the teacher in me. Savannah Chase: For me the most important thing would have to be characters they can fall in love with, even relate to. I want my books to take them away if it is only for a few pages. I want readers to be able to care about the characters. Elle Amery: The most important thing that I can bring to my readers is the chance to let go of all their own troubles and enter into another world—a world where difficulties and challenges may exist, but all absolutely will come out well in the end. And when the reader is done with one of my stories, I hope they have a strengthened sense of self and of the belief that good things do happen, the girl does get the prince, the good guy is out there, life can be wonderful. Sèphera Girón: I always say I live to entertain. I want my stories to be read and enjoyed and not take a lot of work to understand what I’m trying to say.

Here’s the EXCERPT from the book prize, Blood & Sex, Vol. 1: Michael by me, Angela Cameron. It’s in the beginning of the book and should give you a little taste of what you can expect. Enjoy! Tori stared at him. If there was one vampire that everyone seemed to think remotely resembled an honest person, it was Michael. Of course, all of the vampiro played the power games and did what best suited their interests. Plus, he was the most powerful in the area. He was right; she couldn’t do it without him. She sighed and nodded. “Only if you swear you won’t molest me or some shit.” He chuckled. “Every time we meet, you act as though I can’t resist you. I assure you that I have plenty of female companions.” “That’s not a promise.” He laughed harder, and with a nod, added, “I swear to you, I won’t do anything while you are enthralled that you don’t ask for.” Tori grumbled, “Still not good enough.” She pointed at him. “You could suggest it, or have me begging through bl—your influences.” His smile faded. “You’re beginning to annoy me.” “You’ll get over it.” He placed a hand over his heart, as if that gave the words more validity. “I promise that I will not do anything that you truly do not wish me to do, and I will not bite you. Even when you beg.” She refused to play his game. “Alright. I’ll be by tomorrow to get started.” With one last gulp that drained the margarita, she slid from the chair. “I expect my payment tonight.” “What?” “You have your promise, which puts me immediately in danger. So I expect payment tonight.” “You’re out of your mind.” “Then you have no deal.” Michael stood and walked toward the door that she knew lead to the V.I.P. section of the club that was reserved for vampires. Shit. If she let him bite her and mess with her head, she probably wouldn’t think straight for days. But she needed him. It wasn’t an option. “Michael.” She caught up to him as he moved into the other room. “I’ll give you half. Just a nibble. No mind games.” He turned to her and a slow grin crept across his face. “I thought you might.” He motioned toward a dark booth in the corner. “It will only take a moment.” Tori’s heart beat a little faster and her palms grew moist as she reached the table. “Don’t be afraid.” “I’m not.” “Liar.” Michael slid into the booth and motioned to the seat beside him. She slipped in, but kept a little space between them. “How do I know you’re going to stop?” “You don’t.” “I want a witness.” He gave her a slight nod, then slipped one arm up on the back of her seat. “Jonas will be here in just a moment.” Dammit. Just what she needed: a witness who wanted her blood as much as he did. Before she could argue, Jonas entered the room. He was even more gorgeous than he had been on stage. The man was pure sex on legs and he stalked toward her with a devious grin. “So, you’re ready to admit how much you want me?” Tori rolled her eyes. “Let’s just get this over with.” Jonas slid in beside her. “What am I going to witness?” Michael spoke before she did. “She agreed to let me feed once, but she doesn’t trust me to stop.” He laughed. “Smart woman.” Michael let out a soft growl. Jonas shrugged. “Alright.” Tori angled herself toward Michael and arched her neck. “Go ahead.” “I was going for the arm, but if you insist.” He slid a warm hand behind her neck and pulled her closer. When Tori closed her eyes, she inhaled him in one long breath that made her mind feel light and dizzy. He smelled wonderful. The scent of him took her back to that light place where her body wanted him naked against her. Somewhere inside her alarms were going off, but she didn’t care. The only thing she cared about was the fact that his other hand was wrapped around her waist, but she wanted it between her legs, massaging the growing throb that made her skin moisten. Her heart thumped and the image of him going down on her filled her mind. She opened her eyes to expel the vision. “I think I don’t—” The pinprick of fangs hit her skin. Then his teeth pushed in with a pop that made her gasp. Her mind focused on the mouth and the feel of Michael’s waist in her hands. She gripped him, feeling the pull of his mouth on her neck, along with the heat from her blood as it moved into him. Time seemed irrelevant as she melted into his grasp. Jonas made a gasping noise that reminded her that he was watching. She felt him scoot closer and could feel his eyes on them. His hand went to her wrist. She knew he was checking her pulse, but it gave her the feeling that he wanted to join them. She heard Jonas say something, but she couldn’t make out the words.

The protaganist of the series, Karen, is a young woman fresh out of grad school, with just one stop left to make before beginning of the rest of her life. Agreeing to meet her family at the old summer home one last time in the hopes of finding some sort of closure to the estrangement between her and her paranoid and delusional father. Karen then suddenly finds herself alone in the large house, in the middle of nowhere, after her family calls to report a travel delay. Now Karen begins to question her own sanity when she falls victim to a vampire attack that night, which reminds her the similar circumstances behind her father’s psychotic break in which his delusions, however, he was the vampire hunter.
The vampire, Billy, returns and informs Karen that his family is using her to settle a score against her father, for killing one of their family members several years ago. Their plan is to present Karen, who is newly turned, to her recently “psychologically rehabilitated” father, and then see which one survives in the end. Karen manages to escape them in one piece, only to embark upon a dark, virtual odyssey. That begins while hitchhiking across the California coast, she searches for what is left of her humanity as well as starting her search for the vampire that turned her, now set on settling a score of her own. During her journey, she finds herself taking refuge in a battered women's shelter, then she is kidnapped by amateur demon hunters, as well as joining a surreal nocturnal commune with her new love vamp Billy and then being confronted with the ethical dilemma of carrying the unborn child of a true monster.
I had a good time reading this novel because it was different from many of the novels that I usually read. I both liked and disliked Karen because even though she is a strong female character there are times that I really thought she could have done things differently if she wanted to. This also goes the same for Billy the vampire who turns Karen because seems like a nice loving guy but then he shows his true colors as a psyhco. There were some very steamy sex scenes between Karen and Billy that I really enjoyed because they have this attraction to one another even though at first Karen hates Billy for turning her. I also felt kind of creeped out when I read some the scary suspense scenes throughout the novel and I should expect that since it is a dark horror erotic novel with vampires. I enjoyed reading the novel though sometimes I wondered who was good and who was evil throughout the novel because sometimes Karen seemed like she was headed towards being evil while somtimes Billy was headed towards actually being good. Towards the end of the novel I was really looking forward to reading the next The Darkness & the Night series to find out what else is in store for Karen and Billy after the way this novel ended. I give this book 3.5 Open Books: Here is the description of the book from Lisa's website and picture: THE DARKNESS & THE NIGHT: BLOOD & COFFEE by Lisa Lane $ 4.99 (Book 1)(225 Pages) Karen is a young woman fresh out of grad school, with just one stop left to make before beginning of the rest of her life. Well on Tuesday I interviewed Lisa Lane, with much pleasure, and I also reviewed, on Monday, Lisa Lane's novel Lust in Space, which is a sci-fi/erotic romance novel that is published by Ravenous Romance. Lisa Lane heard about me through erotic romance author Keta Diablo who recommended me to Lisa if she wanted to have her Sci-fi/erotic romance novel reviewed. When I got the e-mail I went to Ravenous Romance to find out more about her novel Lust in Space. I found the blurb for the book very intriguing so I e-mailed Lisa back and we worked out that I would review the novel as well as having an author interview and author guest blog as well. Well today is her guest blog about her current release Lust in Space and how she came to write it.
* * * * *
First off, I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about my work. I wrote Lust in Space in response to Ravenous Romance’s call for a sci-fi space odyssey, always having wanted to write a work in that genre. I had numerous ideas for aliens and space-age dilemmas, and I jumped into the project, feeling confident in the novel’s potential. Lust in Space came to me in just six weeks, and it was an absolute joy to write. I feel that I took many chances with Lust in Space, meshing pulp fiction, romance, erotica, and experimental elements. I felt it important, given the mesh of genres, that I explore the main elements as far as I could, my endeavor being to offer a broad-ranged experience for both my readers and me. I wanted to create a work that might offer quotes worthy of literary criticism on one line, while being surprising and creative enough to make me blush on the next. I hope I made you blush, too. Blurb: Captain Nora Bradley has full intentions of keeping her relationship with former classmate, and now First Officer, Robert Smith, purely professional, when she hires him. The two, along with a crew of top professionals in their fields, embark on a journey into regions of space not yet charted. Along the way, the crew endures a space flu that puts the entire ship in fevered frenzy, alien races that change the crews' perceptions of size, compatibility, and companionship, and hitchhiking shape-shifters that will do just about anything to keep their sensuous human forms. As the crew endures, Nora and Robert can’t help but profess their love for one another...but can their love survive a mix-up with the shape-shifters, the unexpected takeover of their ship, and intergalactic war? You can find Lisa Lane at her Website, MySpace, Facebook and on Ravenous Romance.

Phoebe Jordan: When did you know that writing romance was going to be the thing that you would do with your life? Which author inspired you to start writing romance?

Lisa Lane: I’ve known since I was about seven or eight that I was a writer, my early influences being sci-fi, literary, and horror. It wasn’t until just a few years ago that I realized how much I also enjoyed writing romance. Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series was a great inspiration, but I have to admit that my main romance influences are actually more erotic; Anne Rice, Olaf Stapeldon, and Anais Nin are my favorites.

Phoebe: Did you know what type of romance you wanted to write about or did you experiment with different genres before you chose the one that you felt was for you?

Lisa: I have experimented a lot with my romance, trying just about everything from sweet and romantic, to exotic and kinky. Anyone who has read any of my work—literary, horror, and romance—knows that I love to mix genres, and I love to test my limits, as a writer. For that reason, I don’t think that I can choose just one genre. I’m still experimenting.

Phoebe: What was the first fiction you ever wrote? And do you still have it with you?

Lisa: My first fiction was a “novel” I wrote when I was eight. It was a heart-wrenching story about a good witch and her cat. I felt the twelve-page behemoth was worthy of a hardbound cover, and so I gave it one, complete with a crayon-drawn picture. I wrote my first serious work of fiction when I was fourteen or fifteen. My twin sister and I co-authored a romantic horror novel, The Nightcrawlers, and the summer we wrote it was probably one of the best summers of my childhood. Sadly, the manuscript and disks got lost in a move, many years ago.

Phoebe: How much research do you have to do for your novels and does it take you a long time to gather that research?

Lisa: That depends. The longest I have ever spent researching on a subject was eight or nine months, for a screenplay I wrote about a man infected with rabies. This was about fifteen years ago, when I didn’t have the Internet, so I spent a lot of time at my local library. I had no idea that there was so much to learn about the effects of rabies on human beings…. My most recent research has been for a character featured in the third installment of The Darkness and the Night series. He’s a varsity football player, and although I know a decent amount about the mechanics of the game, I needed to know the dynamics of being a player. I interviewed the vice-president of a professional football team for all of the details, and then used a few quick web searches to fill in the blanks. In all, it took me a couple of months, but I think it will make a big difference in the depth and believability of the character.

Phoebe: How did you come up with the concept for your latest novel Lust in Space?

Lisa: Ravenous Romance had sent out a call for submissions, noting that they were looking for numerous types of stories, one being a “Star-Trek”-inspired romance. I had always wanted to write an episode for my favorite “Star-Trek” series but I hadn’t felt confident enough at the thought of altering, personally, a universe I loved so much, ever to pursue it. When I saw the chance to create my own universe in the genre, I knew I needed to jump on it. I brainstormed over the next day or two, and then sent in my ideas for characters and storylines, ecstatic with what the muses presented. I gave my characters diverse personas, mixing and matching traits of various favorite space-themed characters, while working to make the cast unique, likeable, and real.

Phoebe: How did you come up with the concept for your novel Blood and Coffee, which is the first book of your The Darkness and the Night series?

Lisa: Blood and Coffee is The Nightcrawlers’ legacy. After having spent a couple of years writing literary science fiction, I decided it was time I wrote a good horror. With my sister’s permission, I scrapped most of the original storyline, keeping only the basic elements, and brought Karen, Billy, and the gang back to life. The Nightcrawlers was reborn as The Darkness and the Night: Book One. Lori Perkins, the lead editor for Ravenous Romance, came up with the fantastic subtitle, Blood and Coffee.

Phoebe: How did you come up with the concept for your upcoming novel Cosmic Orgasm, which is the second book of your The Darkness and the Night series?

Lisa: I knew I couldn’t just leave my readers hanging with Blood and Coffee’s bittersweet ending, but I knew that I didn’t want to follow the typical formula, either. I had a number of characters from Blood and Coffee that I knew needed some attention, and I knew that I wanted to include at least one of them in one of my plot twists. I decided that Karen needed a new love interest, but I needed a way to detach her from Billy. I also knew that I wanted Karen to begin to develop her abilities as a vampire, and move one step closer toward the normalcy she so desperately seeks. The idea of giving John-Michael bounty hunters seemed to fit, and the Astral hell Karen falls into felt like the right solution to all of my other problems.

Phoebe: How many more novels do you have planned to write for your The Darkness and the Night series?

Lisa: I only have one more book planned for the series, but I can’t say for certain that I won’t write any more. I love the characters, and their universe is vast. I have a short story that prequels the series, following a couple of the minor characters and how they came to be, but I don’t have any immediate publication plans for it. I have considered stories for a few other characters; if the demand ever arises, I would be happy to develop more.

Phoebe: Do you have a process of how you start to write your novels?

Lisa: I usually start with the basic premise and the characters. I generally spend a few days creating character profiles, giving them backgrounds, beliefs, and traits. I make sure I have all prerequisite research finished, as well as a basic skeleton of the novel, before I begin writing. The first page of the first chapter is always the hardest for me. I must have my coffee, and I must have silence. I stare at the screen, sometimes for several minutes (sometimes longer), thinking about the characters as I wait for the first words to come. When they come, I don’t hesitate; I trust the muses.

Phoebe: Which do you like best, writing a series or writing stand alone novels? How is writing each different for you?

Lisa: There are advantages and disadvantages to both. When writing a stand-alone novel, one doesn’t have to worry about “plot dumps” and other consistencies that might need addressing. All of my literary works are stand-alone, although I do feel the need to tie everything I write, no matter what the genre, into the same “universe.” Series are great, because they allow for greater exploration into plot twists and character backgrounds, and offer more room for story evolution. For example, in The Darkness and the Night series, each of the books stands alone, but the books also have an interlocking storyline, with some interesting twists that one can enjoy in even greater depth after reading the entire series.

Phoebe: What process did you have to go through to get your first book published and did it take you long?

Lisa: I have been working to sell my fiction for over a decade. I have a stack of rejection letters several inches tall. I began to network online a few years ago, following author and agent blogs, and worked to connect with people who I felt had similar literary taste, passion, and motivation. As the rejection letters continued to pile up, so did the short stories and novels. When agent and editor Lori Perkins posted on her blog an open call for submissions for Ravenous Romance’s romantic/erotic anthology, Sex and Shoes, I knew I had the perfect story. She accepted it. I sent in a couple more stories, in response to an open call for the Men in Shorts anthology. To my delight, Ravenous Romance requested even more, and we began to negotiate both Lust in Space and the possibility of publishing The Darkness and the Night series.

Phoebe: How did you feel when you finally saw your first published book came out and how do you feel about your other novels being published?

Lisa: I was elated. The cover was fantastic, and I was very pleased with all of the feedback and editorial work Ms. Perkins had contributed. It meant so much to me that finally I was able to share my passion with others. Writing is such a huge part of my life, and to be able to display my efforts in such a way was literally a dream come true. I’m a literary buff at heart; I believe in changing the world, one work at a time, as corny as that sounds, and I believe I have a lot to say. What better way to spread goodwill and provoke thought, than to do so though one’s art? It is an honor to have one novel published; to have multiple novels published is just amazing. Lust in Space was an opportunity for me to take some chances in my writing, chances that I hadn’t before known I had it in me to take. Cosmic Orgasm was another one; I really raised my own bar when I redrafted it for Ravenous Romance, and am confident that the third The Darkness and the Night book will benefit greatly from all that I have learned and chanced on the others. I hope to have the opportunity to publish many, many more titles.

Phoebe: Do you ever get writers block? What do you do to get rid of it so you can get back to writing your novels?

Lisa: I get writer’s block at least once or twice for every novel I write. It’s inevitable. When the words won’t come, I know I have two choices: push through it and force out the words, or walk away from the computer for a day or two. Usually I know when it’s time to impose upon myself a short break, although often I’ll try to work through it, anyway. Another effective tactic that I’ve found useful is to work on two projects at once, and go back and forth between them.

Phoebe: Which aspects of writing do you enjoy the most and why? And what are your writing pet peeves, if you have any?

Lisa: I enjoy watching the movie play in my mind as my fingers type and the story unfolds in front of me. Writing is as much an escape for me as it is excruciating work, both my best friend and my worst enemy. I look forward to the surprises even I don’t see coming, knowing that, if I work as the muses’ willing slave, they will reward me aptly. Conversely, I feel driven to write for long stretches, my personal deadlines strict. Sometimes the story is so compelling that I can’t bring myself to stop, and I fall into lengthy and exhausting writing binges. Again, the reward is great, but it comes at a cost.

Phoebe: How do you handle your writing schedule and your personal life without going insane?

Lisa: One can handle a writing schedule and a personal life without going insane? My friends and family know that I spend most of my time writing, and so no one takes it personally when I opt out on social events. Writing has become such an integral part of my life that, no matter what else I have going on, I find the time to write.

Phoebe: What do you do to relax after having spent a long while writing?

Lisa: Sometimes I’ll watch television in the evenings, or play board or video games; I’m a sucker for scrabble, survival horror games, and fantasy RPG’s. I also love to spoil my cats...and my very supportive husband.

Phoebe: Do you have any hobbies?

Lisa: Writing and promotion, lol. When I’m not writing and I do have free time, I like to read and draw. I consider myself an activist for more than one cause. I paint one or two moderate sized works a year, almost always gouache on canvas. I used to do a lot of songwriting and singing, and have been in a couple of bands. I also enjoy designing new CD covers for my twin sister’s band, Mad Menagerie.

Phoebe: Is there any advice that you would give to an aspiring romance writer that you wish someone had given you?

Lisa: Make sure you know the difference between romance and erotica, and make sure you know your market.

Phoebe: Is there any writing tips, research tips, promotion and marketing tips that you would give to an aspiring romance writer that you wish someone had given you?

Lisa: Selling a book to a publishing company isn’t nearly as hard as selling a book to the masses. Network, network, network. Your books are not going to sell themselves; if you want them to sell, you absolutely must turn promotion into one of your hobbies.

Phoebe: Now for a question that I have been meaning to ask an author. Do you have a favorite genre you like to read? Who is your favorite author(s)?

Lisa: I don’t have one favorite genre, my tastes being numerous, but I do have a few favorite works. My all-time favorite reads are Ted Chiang’s novelette, Hell is the Absence of God, which I discovered when approached by a director/producer about writing a screen adaptation, Joseph Conrad’s fantastic novella, Heart of Darkness, which was the inspiration for the highly acclaimed Apocalypse Now, Stephen King’s The Shining, H.G. Wells’s “The Star,” and Olaf Stapledon’s Last and First Men.

So come back tomorrow because my interview with Lisa Lane will be posted and the author guest blog will be up on Thursday. Captain Nora Bradley has full intention of keeping her relationship with former classmate, and now First Officer, Robert Smith, purely professional. And it is a real shame that they can only have a professional relationship because they seem like they might come to really love one another. When she hires him, the two, along with a crew of top professionals in their fields, embark on a journey into regions of space not yet charted. It's a dangerous yet great opportunity to be able to embark on a journey to uncharted regions of space filled with untold adventures.

Along the way, the crew endures a space flu that puts the entire ship in a fevered frenzy, alien races that change the crews' perceptions of size, compatibility, and companionship, and hitchhiking shape-shifters that will do just about anything to keep their sensuous human forms. All these different situations happen what seems like one right after another and it is really fast passed but so amazing to read. As the crew endures a lot of different emotions, Nora and Robert can't help but profess their love for one another...but can their love survive a mix-up with the shape-shifters, the unexpected takeover of their ship, and intergalactic war? I certainly think so because they seem like strong and single minded people that can do anything they set their minds to. I really loved reading this novel and I couldn't shut down my laptop until I completely finished reading Lust in Space. Nora and Robert are my favorite characters of this novel but I also really enjoyed all the other characters both human and alien that also filled this novel with adventure and excitement.

I've never seen "Star Trek" before though Lisa did mention that she came up with this book and the world that it is set in on that old television show. This is a novel that I recommend to everyone to give a try because if you don't you are totally missing out. Lisa Lane delivers a wonderfully intriguing, suspenseful and highly erotic romance novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting more even after the novel ends. Lisa if you are reading this I would really like it if you could write a sequel to Lust in Space because there is so much that I would really enjoy knowing more about in that world especially with Nora and Robert. I give this book 5 Open Books:
