Well I stumbled upon Kinley MacGregor when I was at Barnes and Noble and I liked what I read on the back cover and decided to get it. This book is among her Brotherhood of the Sword Series. I enjoyed so much because Queen Adara and Christen of Arc are both very intriguing characters. They also seem to really get on each others nerves very nicely and I think that makes for some interesting reading. It had a strong heroine who could fight her own battles but has her weaknesses like anyone else. I also loved the handsome and emotionally scarred hero who couldn't totally ignore the lovely yet very stubborn and pushy heroine. I think that Adara is exactly the woman that Christen needs because he has been lost for so long and with no family to love him. Adara is the woman who will give him what he needs that his parents use to have with each other. I think that Christen has been away from his kingdom for too long and he needs to take his rightful place by her side and do what is best for their people. I also have to say that sometimes when I read Kinley MacGregor's historical romance novels it reminds me of Cathy Maxwell's historical romance novels. Here is the description of the book from the back cover and picture:

RETURN OF THE WARRIOR $ 6.99 (Book 6)(372 Pages)

Fiercely devoted to her people and her land, Queen Adara refuses to let a power-mad usurper steal her crown. But the only way to protect what is hers is to seek out the man she married in childhood. Well I stumbled upon Kinley MacGregor when I was at Barnes and Noble and I liked what I read on the back cover and decided to get it. This book is among her Brotherhood of the Sword Series. I enjoyed so much because Rowena and Stryder of Blackmoor are both very intriguing characters. I think that Rowena is exactly the woman that Stryder needs because they are so different that they are compatible with each other. Rowena is the peace-loving half while Stryder is the war-hero half of this whole beatiful couple. They are ying and yang and I think that is what made this novel so much more interesting and enjoyable to read. I also have to say that sometimes when I read Kinley MacGregor's historical romance novels it reminds me of Cathy Maxwell's historical romance novels. Here is the description of the book from the back cover and picture:

A DARK CHAMPION $ 6.99 (Book 5)(375 Pages)

The beautiful Rowena detests war and all who fight it—and would never allow a knight like Stryder of Blackmoor into her heart. But even the renowned Lady of Love needs a champion…

A LADY OF LOVE

A MAN OF WAR

Duty bound to battle for right, Stryder has never desired the comforts of home and hearth—until he gazed upon the exquisite face and form of incomparable Rowena. He dares not succumb to her sensuous charms, for Stryder is a man sworn to know no love. But when treachery and danger threaten, the noble knight must stand as the unsuspecting lady’s champion—though his actions could cost him his honor, his heart…and his forbidden dream of happiness.

A couple of weeks a go I was contacted by one of the two ladies who write under the name Gabriella Hewitt. Sasha Tomaszycki contacted me because she visited my blog before and wanted to know if I would review her book and even interview her. Her eBook Dark Waters is finally in print today and I will be posting an interview with her later on today where you can post your questions about Dark Waters. Here is a link to my review of her book, which she gave me an e-copy for me to read and review and was very nice enough to send my an autographed print copy when she got a new stack sent from the publishing company. Now onto the interview, which I have to say was very exciting because I learn so much about Sasha Tomaszycki and her writing partner Patrizia M.J. Hayashi and about Gabriella Hewitt's novels. Here is how the interview went:

* * * *

Phoebe: Do you have a process of how you start to write one of your novels? And is it the same or different with each novel you write?

Gabriella Hewitt: When I realized you could write about sex! No, seriously I love that romance allows for me to write just about every genre – suspense, action, mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, etc. and I can mix it all up and still have a happily ever after.

Phoebe: Did you know what type of romance you wanted to write about or did you experiment with different genres before you chose the one that you felt was for you?

Gabriella: Oh I’ve written all over the place. I’ve found a happy medium with romantic suspense and paranormals. Although, I am still waiting to write a futuristic sci-fi fantasy featuring space fairies who kick butt : )

Phoebe: What was the first fiction you ever wrote? And do you still have it with you?

Gabriella: The first fiction I wrote was called Blood Ties, it is a gothic romantic suspense. It got rejected everywhere it went but I think one day it will find a home. I posted it as free read on authonomy. Check it out.

Phoebe: How did the two of you come together to create author Gabriella Hewitt?

Gabriella: We met online at eharlequin.com. We wrote for a fan fiction group called Midnight Intrigues. We wrote a story together and it received good feedback, even Debra Webb told us that she did not know where one began and the other finished writing. We took it as a compliment.

Phoebe: How much research do you have to do for your novels and did it take you a long time to gather that research?

Gabriella: All together about 3+ months doing extensive research. We called up an ICE agent to ask questions, talked with a gun expert, and studied magazines, websites and travel books to learn about Vieques, PR where the story is set. That was only the beginning, we still had to do research about el chupacabra and Santoria, which I talked with a real witch online and went to a mystic shop to learn about the herbs used to rid a home of spirits.

Phoebe: How did you come up with the Dark Waters?

Gabriella: We originally wrote the story geared toward Harlequin Intrigue. Over the course of writing it we realized the characters wanted us to tell a deep story.

Phoebe: Do you have a process of how you start to write one of your novels? And is it the same or different with each novel you write?

Gabriella: Each novel is different in how we approach them but for the most part we do come up with a rough outline of how we expect the story to go. This changes as we begin to write. Funny how those characters have a way of taking over the story.

Phoebe: What process did you have to go through to get your first book published and did it take you long?

Gabriella: We submitted to a few houses and editors. Samhain Publishing picked up the story. It took about 6 months to a year for Dark Waters to be contracted after it was written.

Phoebe: How did you feel when you finally saw your first published book came out in print and how do you feel about your other novels being published?

Gabriella: Awesome! Sometimes I am in disbelief that I actually wrote this book. I hope the feeling never ends.

Phoebe: Which do you like best, writing a series or writing stand alone novels? How is writing each different for you?

Gabriella: Each book can be read alone but so far I have written series.

Phoebe: How do you handle your writing schedule, your book signing appearances, and your personal life without going insane?

Gabriella: Life is insane. I have children so I know how hectic life can get. Still writing a book is like having a small child and you have to go with the flow. Writing a book is like giving birth to a child, it is a labor of love. You find time to take care of everything.

Phoebe: Have you had anything strange or funny happen to you at any of your book signings or even when you go out?

Gabriella: Not yet. My first book signing will be at Border Books in Farmingdale on September 6th. So I will let you know if I get one of those embarrassing moments where someone runs away from the woman selling smut.

Phoebe: Do you take certain amounts of breaks in between your writing and book signing appearances to have personal time with family and friends?

Gabriella: My family comes first and they are my biggest supporters and fans.

Phoebe: What do you do to relax after having spent a long while writing?

Gabriella: I eat tons of chocolate. (For the anti-aging benefits of course.)

Phoebe: Do you have any hobbies?

Gabriella: Cooking. I love to cook. On my blog from time to time I post recipes of what I’m whipping up for dinner. I also have a downloadable recipe book with Puerto Rican dishes in honor of Dark Waters release. Check it out.

Phoebe: Is there any advice that you would give to an aspiring romance writer that you wish someone had given you?

Gabriella: Read. Read. Read. Write. Write. Write. Network. Network. Network. And above all else believe in yourself.

Phoebe: Is there any writing tips, research tips, promotion and marketing tips that you would give to an aspiring romance writer that you wish someone had given you?

Gabriella: Oh my! Promotions…what can I say about it. Be absolutely shameless. If I had to I would dance naked in the isles if it would sell more copies of my books. Whenever you can plug your book, at parties, on the train, on the beach, everywhere you go carry business cards or bookmarks and hand them out to everyone you meet.

Phoebe: Is there any advice that you would give to an aspiring romance writer looking to find a critique partner and/or critique group that you think would be beneficial and wish someone had give you the same advice?

Gabriella: When I was in college and wrote for the school newspaper, I met Nora Roberts. This was before she became superstar extraordinaire and I got to sit with her for an hour. She told me to looking into RWA and other groups that supported romance writers. I took her words to heart. I joined RWA and went to conventions in NJ and NY. I met great people. I still meet great people everyday online who also share the same enthusiasm for writing and reading romance. Best advice if you can’t swing the hefty price tag of joining RWA. Go hang out in forums where people read the same books as you. RomanceDivas.com is a great place, eharlequin.com, RomanceJunkies.com, and any other yahoo groups that are there to support the type of writing you love.

Sasha Tomaszycki contacted me because she visited my blog before and wanted to know if I would review her book and even interview her. Her eBook Dark Waters is finally in print today and I will be posting an interview with her later on today where you can post your questions about Dark Waters. Well now on to my review of her book, which she gave me an e-copy for me to read and review and was very nice enough to send my an autographed print copy when she got a new stack sent from the Samhain Publishing company.
I have to say that it was pretty exciting to read about a myth such as the chupacabra because as you may not know my mother is Dominican and my father is Puerto Rican and I've heard many stories of the chupacabra. I also don't usually read that many romance novels about Hispanic people and this book was such a nice change of pace for me. Frankie Montalvo is a strong Latina woman who had a very tough childhood since she was an only child and both her parents died and she was put into the New York foster system. Rico Lopez is a strong Latin man who had a loving childhood with both loving parents and his siblings both sisters and brother. From the first page the story captivated me because of the whole el chupacabra angle that was being used in the novel. I've seen a couple of pictures and even an interesting movie about the chupacapra and so reading this novel really fascinated me. I have to say that the characters Frankie and Rico also held my attention because they really got one another's attention from the start of the book.
The story kept me on my toes because of all the suspense with the chupacabra and Frankie's very strange family member such as her drunken uncle and high priestess aunt. I loved the sexual tension between Frankie and Rico. They make an interesting couple and very good together even though they had a lot of rough roads to get through in order to finally realize that they were meant for each other. I also didn't expect the novel to end the way it did and I really loved how it ended. I'm really glad that I was fortunate enough to get a free copy of this wonderful sexy and suspenseful tale with a tropical twist that kept me so intrigued I had to keep turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next with Frankie and Rico. Here is the description of the book from the back cover and picture:
DARK WATERS by Gabriella Hewitt (Book 1)(204 Pages)

All she’s ever wanted was to settle down and live life on her own terms, but someone has other plans and Frankie must decide—is Rico her lover or her enemy?
Special Agent Rico Lopez has been to the depths of hell and back. I also loved the handsome and emotionally scarred hero who couldn't totally ignore the lovely yet very stubborn and pushy heroine. I think that Nora is exactly the woman that Ewan needs to get finally forgive himself for what he did to his brother in the past. I also think that Ewan has finally found the woman for him who sees and loves him for who he is and not for his MacAlister name. Today is a special day because I have a special Guest Blogger, and you probably remember her because she guest blogged before, her name is Shelley Munro and she has an upcoming release on August 6th that she will be talking about today. Shelley was nice enough to stop by the blog and talk about her upcoming release Assassin, the fourth book releases from Ellora’s Cave. I'm happy that she had enough time to stop by and tells us about how Assassin came to be written and what it is about. You can visit her website, her blog and her MySpace.

* * *

Hi! I'm Shelley Munro, and I write for Ellora's Cave and Samhain Publishing. A huge thanks to Phoebe for inviting me to visit. Today I'm talking about my favorite type of shapeshifter—the feline or big cat.

From the moment I saw an article in the New Zealand Herald about sightings of a mystery black cat in Canterbury, South Island, I knew it would make a good story. I cut out the article and kept it for about three years while I wrote about other things such as talking dogs, aliens and military men. It wasn’t until I saw a human interest story on our local television about a small South Island town called Middlemarch that I recalled the cat article. Evidently, the town of Middlemarch had a severe shortage of marriageable females and to help the young farmers and other men in the area find partners, the town intended to organize a dance.

The two ideas blended inside my head and a story bloomed about a community of leopard shifters who lived in Middlemarch and suffered from a shortage of women of marriageable age.

The first book in the series, Scarlet Woman, was one of the most difficult stories I’ve ever written. It started life as a short story. My editor liked it but thought there was too much story for the length I’d written. She suggested that I lengthen it, which I did, although my characters kicked up a fuss. So did my muse. I’m pleased I persevered because it’s now one of my favorite stories.

This week I finished writing the seventh book in my Middlemarch Mates series. I’m not sure why I enjoy writing about feline shifters so much. Maybe it’s because my husband isn’t a cat fan and we have a dog instead. I have to make up for it somehow! My cat of choice is the black leopard, although I have introduced a brother and sister in Stray Cat Strut who are lion shifters.

On August 6, Assassin, the fourth book releases from Ellora’s Cave. Here’s the blurb:

Feline shifter Leo Mitchell is the pretty brother who attracts women with ease, but he’s turned picky. He suspects the mystery blonde hanging around Middlemarch is the one for him. If only he could grab the elusive female and seduce her. Oh yeah. He craves some hot, sinful lovin’ with the lady in black leather.

Assassin Isabella Black has harbored a huge crush on hunky Leo for ages. Because the timing sucked she’s watched him from afar, praying another woman won’t snatch the hottie away before she’s free to stake a claim.

Finally the pair meet. Isabella offers her naked body but Leo counteracts with a cup of tea. Seems Leo likes to call the shots when it comes to sex. A day later they’re finally dancing horizontally. It’s smokin’ hot, steamy, delicious—everything she’s ever wanted. Isabella is ecstatic until another assassin threatens to ruin her happiness. It’s life or death now. One wrong move and her secrets will destroy the Mitchells along with everything that has become dear to her…including Leo.

And here’s a short excerpt from Assassin:

The bastard was out there.

Isabella Black could feel him like an irritating itch at her nape. He was there. The same instinct that had led her to come outside searching told her he was there, hidden out of sight, waiting patiently. With heavy tension swirling in the pit of her stomach, she scanned the hills and rocky outcrops surrounding Middlemarch, resisting the urge to stomp back and forth in a show of frustration. She didn’t like the situation. It pushed her temper from calm to uncertain, which wasn’t good for someone in her line of work. Her breath escaped in an impatient hiss.

At least the target was safe, stashed in a secure house on an isolated farm. Felix Mitchell would keep his new family from harm or die in the effort. As it should be, Isabella thought with approval. Felix was an honorable man and perfect for Tomasine. Isabella swiveled silently to scan the main road dissecting the small township below. The breeze ruffled her shoulder-length hair and she brushed it off her face with an impatient hand. She reached for the case holding her high-powered rifle. Without looking down, Isabella assembled the weapon and loaded it, holding the rifle lightly in her hands. She turned slowly, eyes watchful.

No strangers. Not a thing out of the ordinary.

Then a flash of light caught her eye, just to the right of a leaning pine.

“Move again. Let me get a good look at you,” she murmured.

Patiently she waited, watched. Finally she caught the outline of a figure picking his way across the hill, slinking from rock to tree.

“That’s it,” she crooned, her fingers flexing around her rifle. She watched him in her telescopic sight, noted his familiar face. One of Mika’s cronies. Even if she hadn’t recognized him, the weapon he carried would have given him away. The man meant business. Kill or be killed. She aimed until his face lined up in the crosshairs of her sight and gently squeezed the trigger, feeling not a trace of remorse.

He fell instantly, remained still.

A quick check ensured no one had witnessed the hit. Not a soul stirred, which wasn’t unusual around Middlemarch since it was a small country town. Isabella moved carefully, needing to check for peace of mind. She watched the body up on the hill, saw he didn’t move, and cautiously approached to check his pulse. When he didn’t move, she nudged him with her foot.

Dead.

Scarlet Woman by Shelley Munro (Book 1)

Emily Scarlet’s husband left her for his secretary and died in a car accident—all on the same day. Now, six months later, Emily has emerged from her chrysalis of painful memories. And to prove she has what it takes to attract a man, she’s determined to experience one perfect night of passion.

Feline shape shifter, Saber Mitchell has a problem with his four boisterous younger brothers. They’re out of control. It’s too late for him, but he hopes to get his brothers mated and settled, and the ball is the place to introduce them to marriageable women.

Unbridled sex is the last thing he plans on, but one glimpse of Emily Scarlet changes his mind. Sex with her is a necessity. They dance. They make love.

One thing is clear—a single night isn’t enough. Saber must have her for his mate, but Emily isn’t so easy to convince…or trust.

Peeping Tom by Shelley Munro (Book 2)

The residents of Middlemarch have a nickname for reporter Tomasine Brooks. They call her Peeping Tom and refuse to answer her questions about the mysterious black cats spotted in the vicinity. To them she’s an outsider—the enemy—who has no place in their close-knit shifter community.

Tomasine is determined to find a safe place to settle but earning the locals’ trust seems impossible. In desperation, she decides to seduce the sexy Felix Mitchell into giving away Middlemarch’s secrets because it’s a matter of life or death…hers.

From the moment feline shifter Felix Mitchell crashes into Tomasine outside the post office he desires her with an urgency that makes him suspect they are fated mates. When they are together the connection is hot, the sex is spicy and she makes him happy, but Tomasine is close-mouthed about her past—a past that can threaten their future together.

Stray Cat Strut by Shelley Munro (Book 3)

I met a male lion shifter in the pub last night. Not that my father would approve since it reinforces my gay status, but Lucas is incredible. Tall. Golden. Sexy. Our gazes met and we clicked. The evening turned into night. The sex was hot. Intense. Real magic that doesn’t happen every day. Hell, it electrified me. By the time the night was over I craved more…I hungered for a future because it’s no fun living alone like a stray cat. I’m just like every Middlemarch shifter, gay or not. All I want is love.

Today's Thursday Thirteen edition I will be writing 13 things about my favorite author Catherine Anderson. All of this information is quoted from her website, Catherine Anderson.
Thirteen Things about Catherine Anderson
1. As a very small child, I played dolls at my mother's feet while she clacked away on an old Underwood. Yes, you guessed it. She was a writer. This has always led me to wonder if the writing bug is passed down genetically or something we catch, like a flu virus. I can build a very good case to back up either theory. 2. My mother often read her work aloud. Long before I knew my alphabet, I had been introduced to the wonderful, magical world of fiction. While she worked at her desk, I created stories for my dolls. Writing, if not in my blood, was drummed into my head by the clack of those typewriter keys. By the time I was a teenager, I was writing my own stories-in notebooks or on paper sacks. It was a compulsion, something I absolutely had to do. I can honestly say that being a writer was never a choice I consciously made, but more an intrinsic part of my makeup. Imagine if you will, choosing not to breathe. That was how I felt about writing, that it was necessary to my survival. 3. My mother was always supportive of my writing bent in those early years. Later, my husband Sid joined my support circle. With both of them so firmly behind me, it's hard for me to believe now that I didn't immediately pursue a writing career. Perhaps every writer must dabble for a while before taking the leap. Whatever the reason, back then I was what I now term a closet writer. I stole time to write and hid my work in a drawer. Breaking into book publishing is difficult, and I was savvy enough about the business to know that. Becoming a published writer had always been my dream, but back then, I considered it to be an impossible one. 4. Meanwhile, I had a "real" life to live, and I decided I should go to college. After I took my entrance exams, the dean telephoned to inform me that my scores were very high, but what impressed him most was my grasp of English. That should have told me something, but I thought the dean called everybody. "Hello, this is Dean So-and-So, and I'm calling to tell you that you flunked." I'd always excelled at English. So? I needed a real profession. 5. Sid was an entrepreneur, so I decided to major in accounting. It only made sense. I reasoned that I would be able to keep the books, get my credentials to be a CPA, and be a valuable asset to him. Big mistake. Though I excelled in those studies, proving to myself and everyone else that I did indeed have some left-brain activity going on, I was bored to tears. I often had an awful feeling of claustrophobia. Was this really what I wanted to do with the rest of my life? I began considering a change of major, but nothing sounded exciting to me. 6. One afternoon when I came home after classes, there was a letter in the mail, inviting me to join a sorority exclusively for women with high GPAs. I'd worked hard to pull those impressive grades. I should have been elated. Instead, I sat down, put my head in my hands, and wept. I felt as if I had dug a deep hole, jumped in, and would never find my way out. I know that sounds insane, but when you force yourself to walk a path that doesn't beckon to your heart, you really are burying yourself, in a way. If I'd never heard the words, "debit" and "credit" again, I would have been happy. The next day I trudged to my classes and dutifully took notes. We'd spent too much money on my education for me to quit. 7. When I look back on it now, I know God truly does work in strange ways. That morning one of my professors asked if she could use samples of my creative writing on an overhead projector to teach. I actually skipped economics to stand in the hall and listen to what she said about my work. That old adage that you'll never hear anything good about yourself when you eavesdrop is false. 8. That night I went to Sid and asked if he'd get mad if I quit school. I didn't want to keep books. I wanted to write them! I just knew he'd be furious. Instead he bought me my first electric typewriter. A couple of years later, he sprang for a word processor. He never berated me for dropping out of school, and now he laughingly says the money he spent on writing equipment was the best investment he ever made. 9. With a man like that in my life, how could I become anything but a romance writer? I wish I could say the rest of my journey to becoming published was a slam-dunk, but I had a long way to go before my work was good enough to make the grade. Having the desire and a good command of English isn't enough. Most of us must first learn our craft. 10. I will take a moment here to thank one very special person for helping me to do that. Her name is Stella Cameron. In those early days when I was struggling to perfect my work, she was a dear friend to me. I will always admire her, not only as a fine writer, but also for being such a wonderful person. 11. I sold my first book to Harlequin Intrigue and went on to write three more before I tried my hand at single-title historical romance. Nine books later, I did a single-title contemporary, followed by "Cherish," another historical. I plan to start switching back and forth between contemporary and historical again soon. 12. I am now living my dream. The child who yearned to be a writer is now a woman who has accomplished her goal. Two years ago, Sid and I moved to Central Oregon. For several months, we lived on the river in a three-bedroom log cabin, which we loved, but it wasn't large enough. Adding on to a log structure is tricky, and that was determined to be an unwise choice by several designers. Spring a year ago, we finally found a one-of-a-kind property, 160 acres of Ponderosa pines, surrounded by state and national forestland. The house, which sits on a ridge, offering spectacular, panoramic views of the mountains, has potential—which is why my office is in the blue print stage. Eventually we will have the home we want, sitting on the land we want. 13. For now, it's adequate, and the seclusion is ideal for writing. In my leisure time, I love to go walking with my dogs. It's incredibly freeing to set off from my front door and walk as far as I wish without seeing another house. In the evenings, weather allowing, we sit on the deck, sipping wine and enjoying the fabulous view. In cold weather, we watch it snow from the Jacuzzi. Occasionally deer or elk come calling. Being an animal lover of longstanding, I've become a vegetarian. Our land is posted with No Hunting signs. I even have a No Hunting sign on my birdhouse. Life is good up on Cinnamon Ridge, not just for us, but for all our furry friends as well.

Cathy Maxwell is one of the many authors that I've stumbled upon when I was looking for new books to add to my ever rising collection of books when I was at Barnes & Noble. Cathy Maxwell writes historical romances that are very good in my opinion. I have almost all of her books that she's ever written and I love getting new books that she has out because they are always enjoyable. This is Cathy Maxwell's first novel that she wrote and got published. I absolutely loved it because it had everything a good historical novel should have. It had a strong heroine who could fight her own battles but has her weaknesses like anyone else. I also loved the handsome and emotionally scarred hero who couldn't totally ignore the lovely yet very stubborn and pushy heroine. I have to say that this has become one of my favorites of Maxwell's and I'm glad that since she wrote this novel she has only gotten better. Here is the description of the book from the back cover and picture:

ALL THINGS BEAUTIFUL $ 6.99 (375 Pages)

Sweet Surrender…

Lady Julia Markham was the toast of London Society—until an ill-advised attempted elopement ended in betrayal and left her good name in tatters. Now ruined, penniless, and desperate, she has agreed to wed the magnetic and possibly dangerous Brader Wolf. A dashing, phenomenally successful self-made businessman, Brader wants this union to help gain him entry into the drawing rooms of the aristocracy, nothing more. Julia, however, is a woman of rare passion and daring, irresistibly drawn to this enigmatic, infuriating man, and no mere marriage of mutual convenience will do. But how far will the spirited beauty have to go to satisfy a heart that will settle for no less than the love a lifetime?
I love Linda Lael Miller's western historical novels so much. I stumbled upon some of her books at Barnes and Noble because her books are always displayed and they are hard to miss. Since I've first discovered her novels I've tried to get as many of her wonderful books as possible. She also writes contemporary romances but I like her historicals more. I especially like her McKettrick series because it starts in the 1800's but the series continues for a couple more generations until it's in the present. You see how the ancesters of the present McKettrick have influenced the whole family line and that is so wonderful the read. I read the series a bit out of line last year but I finally got all the books in the series and have started reading it all from the beginning. The series has 9 novels so far and I think there are going to be more in this series because there are a lot of McKettricks. So I guess you've noticed that this week I've been reading all the books in the McKettrick series and what a series it is.
The McKettrick Way is the ninth book in the series and continues the story of the stubborn and hardheaded McKettrick family. We are now in the present and we are seeing the children of the children of the first McKettrick men, Angus, Holt, Rafe, Kade and Jeb. This book is about Meg McKettrick who is from the Holt McKettrick line. We met Meg McKettrick in Sierra's Homecoming because she is Sierra McKettrick's older sister and well this is her story. I really loved this book and I have to say that it is my favorite of all the books in the series. I thought that Brad O'Ballivan is the perfect match for Meg because besides have a past romantic affair they seemed to compliment each other well. I thought that it was cool that the O'Ballivan family line was strong in the present because I love the Stone Creek Series (I'll be writing about this series soon). They had to go through a lot to finally find the love that they share is something wonderful and that made the novel some much more exciting to read. This is such a wonderful novel because I can still see the McKettrick and O'Ballivan from the past influencing the McKettrick and O'Ballivan of the present and it just makes me compare how the present McKettrick's and O'Ballivan's are just like there ancestors. This book is such a good read that I finished it up in 5 hours and it made me want more. I also think that the McKettrick men pick out very strong willed women to marry and they keep these McKettrick men on their toes and it goes vice versa for the McKettrick women. The end of this book hinted that there would be more McKettrick books to come and even a new series about an extended family of the McKettrick family line. Here is the description of the book from the back cover and picture:

Today is a special day because I have a special Guest Blogger, and you probably remember her because she guest blogged before, her name is Tara S. Nichols and she has a new release today that she will be talking about today. Tara was nice enough to stop by the blog and talk about her second novel Secrets of Summer. I'm happy that she had enough time to stop by again and tells us about how Secrets of Summer came to be written and what it is about. You can visit her blog and her MySpace.

* * *

Sometimes being a writer has its perks! Okay, most of the time being a writer is just plain perky. One of my favourite perks is the research. That may sound strange but considering what I write, research isn’t a bad thing. I’m not getting at the sex scenes either. My latest release, Secrets of Summer, published this past April through Cobblestone-press, is located on a gorgeous lake shore among an eclectic group of cottages. My family used to rent one of those cottages and it was just that which inspired me to write a summer crush romance based on what I would have liked to have happened to me. Naturally, to get the feel for the setting, I had to go down there in person.

Imagine the fine white sands burning the souls of your feet as you tip toe your way to your towel. Smell the sunscreen, bug spray and salty snacks of your fellow beach goers and ogle the buff scantily clad bodies as they parade around, dipping in and out of the water.

Wood smoke mingled with charring meats waft from your neighbour’s grill and the familiar semi damp decay of summer homes and cotton sheets greet you as you kick off your flip flops at the screen door.

Cottage living is easy and often relaxing but it can also be a great place to meet new people and to party. Temporary relationships, sometimes long lasting friendships, are common and perhaps, the deepest.

That is how it is for Pyper and Liam, two residents of Victoria Beach’s community. Living right next door to one another all their lives for half of the year, they were aware of each other, they just never were properly introduced. They travelled in different circles and even though both were curious about the other, it wasn’t until it was nearly too late that they finally really met.

Here’s an excerpt of Secrets of Summer:

Secrets of Summer by Tara S. Nichols

“I thought I wasn’t your type. I wanted you to want me, but you were always too busy with other girls.”

He looked away thoughtfully. “Yes, that’s true,” he admitted. “I was a busy boy.”
She couldn’t help but smile at his honesty.

“I’ve got to say, I am glad I never really got the chance to be with you though.”
Her skin went cold at his hurtful words. Here it was, she thought, feeling as though a door had slammed shut in her face.

Liam’s eyes widened. “Don’t get me wrong.” He reached out to touch her shoulder, as if trying to reassure her. “What I mean is, all those other girls were just fun. I had sex anywhere and everywhere I could, but it didn’t mean anything. I barely remember one girl from the next.”

She rolled her eyes. “I know. I also saw Lana Tucker’s head bobbing up and down on your prick, as you so elegantly called it, behind the movie house. You weren’t as discreet as you thought you were. If I didn’t see you myself, I certainly would have heard about it from the gossip flying about.”

“Yeah, and that is exactly what I was getting at. You were never a part of my tarnished past.”

He wasn’t making sense, and her suspicious nature didn’t help. She wanted to protect herself, pull away, but he held her fingers tight.

“You aren’t the only one with insecurities. When I saw you standing outside that first night, all those buried feelings resurfaced. You looked just the same; pure, innocent, delicate. And I just wanted to see you in your uniform again. Then when I was inside your house, saw the love and felt the safety that always surrounded you, I felt ashamed. I didn’t expect to feel this anxious, but I have a shady reputation, especially around here. Everything was so public, as you already know, but I’ve changed. Now I fear you’ll think I’m just a fling, or worse yet, cheap. I feared you would think I was too experienced, too dirty, and perhaps even too perverse.”

Her heart softened, and she smiled at his confession. Yes, she had wondered if he had changed. Yes, she had been tempted to just experience him, have a little fun if he offered, but now, seeing the distress in his eyes, she ached to reassure him, to tell him how much she wanted him. Besides, he had the wrong impression of her as well. She didn’t want to always be thought of as the innocent one. She wanted to explore a little. She wanted to have fun.

“I like you, Liam. I always have. We don’t really know each other, but I’d sure like to. There’s a wild side to me, too.”

The crease across his brow eased, and his fingers loosened their grip.

For a moment, she feared it might get awkward between them, the fire they had ignited seemed to be smoldering and threatening to snuff out.

Tipping her chin down, she looked up at him coyly through her lashes. “You know, I used to sleep on the top bunk, listening to you rutting in the bushes, and I would pretend it was me.”

His gaze darted to the window, then back to her. His eyebrows arched up quizzically, and she knew she’d recaptured the moment. Now she was the one initiating, the one with the dirty mind. She ran the tip of her tongue over her upper lip, feeling a surge of adrenalin at the idea of acting so seductive, so naughty.

“I had this urge,” she started with a sly look to the window, “to press my ass against the pane in hopes that you would see and maybe…” She trailed off, catching her bottom lip on her teeth. She could see his chest rising and falling faster as she spoke.

“Maybe I’d come over, open the window just a crack, enough to slid just one finger in?” he finished for her, his voice a low rumble as he picked up on her coy little game.

He moved another step closer, his eyes burning bright with lust once again. “That window isn’t too high, either. You could have stood on your tip toes, and your mouth might have just reached my poor, tortured pussy.” Describing her womanhood in such a way sent a wave of electricity to her groin. “I sure could have used a good tongue lashing. Especially after all of that filth I was reading.”

His hands reached along her arms, capturing them by her sides. “Why don’t you show me which bunk was yours?” His eyes narrowed, betraying his wicked intentions.

Her heart fluttered with anticipation. He took her hand and led her to the soft mattress on the bottom bunk. He sat down and pulled her to stand in front of him. His gaze roved all over the length of her, taking her all in with obvious delight.

“Man, do I ever wish you were wearing a skirt right now.” His voice sounded thick with lust.

“I do have one,” she suggested.

“No. Don’t change a thing. I want to take this opportunity right now.” He slid his fingers up under her sweater, and she gasped at the contact of his skin against hers. His fingers slid higher, bringing the bottom of the sweater up to expose her waist. She felt his warm breath against her abdomen, followed by the heat of his tongue inside her navel as he teased, tickled, and made small circles around the tiny dint, sending shivers of pleasure along her throat.

Here’s a little of my updated news. I signed a contract for Gamble's Game with BookStrands and that book is scheduled to come out January 2009. It’s a contemporary erotic romance.

This book is about Jesse McKettrick who is from the Jeb McKettrick line and who was also introduced in the sixth book Sierra's Homecoming. Reading about these Jesse and Cheyenne reminded me a bit of Chloe and Jeb. Jesse is so much link his ancestor Jeb that it is so wonderful to read. Sierra's Homecoming is the fifth book in the series and continues the story of the stubborn and hardheaded McKettrick family. We are now in the present and we are seeing the children of the children of the first McKettrick men, Angus, Holt, Rafe, Kade and Jeb. This book is sort of a two-in-one novel because it starts out with a story about Sierra McKettrick in the present, 2007, and then you read about Hannah McKettrick who is in the past, 1919. Reading about these two women from both the past and present shows how no matter what century you live in love is a sweet yet complicated emotion. This is such a wonderful novel because I can still see the McKettrick from the past influencing the McKettrick of the present and it just makes me compare how the present McKettrick's are just like there ancestors.
